The need for WASHCost
Updated - Thursday 23 July 2009
Why do we need WASHCost?
To achieve sustained services for the poor and underserved and for investments that last and go beyond the Millennium Development Goals.
There is a grave yard of investments, we are more confident at building new systems than maintaining existing ones. Around 30% of the rural systems are not working, slippage* is reported in India and there are many more context specific examples. WASHCost will analyse the disaggregated costs of the life-cycle which ensures that you know how much to allocate and how much to give to each of the villages when services fall back. How much does it really cost to ensure the service delivery which helps the government to plan and implement better services.
*"Slippage", i.e. how WASH services "slip back" into poor states of operation and maintenance, often caused by over-use and over-extraction of water resources as well as lack of adequate maintenance.
